3. Preventable with Lifestyle Changes

  • Most NCDs share common modifiable risk factors such as tobacco use, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and harmful use of alcohol (WHO, 2023). Therefore, a large proportion of NCDs are preventable through lifestyle modification.
  • For Example: maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco can reduce heart disease risk by up to 30–40% (GBD Collaborative Network, 2024).

4. Global and Local Impact

  • While NCDs affect people in all countries, low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) bear nearly three-quarters of all NCD deaths, largely due to limited access to preventive care and early diagnosis (WHO, 2023). In India, NCDs account for approximately 63% of total deaths (WHO India, 2023).

5. Intergenerational Impact

  • NCDs can influence the health of future generations. For example, children of diabetic or hypertensive parents have a higher likelihood of developing these diseases later in life (WHO, 2023). Early life exposures, such as childhood obesity and poor nutrition, also increase adult NCD risk
  • Example: A child raised in a household with poor dietary habits may have a greater chance of developing obesity and diabetes later in life.
