Both short sleep (>6 hours) and long sleep (<9 hours) are linked to higher risk of chronic diseases including NCDs, and mental health problems.
Short duration sleep is linked to:
- Diabetes
- High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
- Obesity
- Dyslipidemia
- High Stress levels and irritated ness
Long duration sleep is linked to:
- Higher risk of multiple chronic conditions
- Increased inflammation in the body
- Reduced physical activity and disrupted body rhythms
The conditions are the result of metabolic imbalance, insulin resistance, and increased appetite.
